Today I start in Vancouver and end up in Munich with a few stops along the way.
After a fitful night’s sleep, I got up and headed off to the Airport so I could have coffee and breakfast in the YVR Lounge. Note to self. This lounge sucks, as far as lounges go. A step up from the Sacramento lounge but not that big of a step…
Decent view of arriving international passengers, though.

A lovely flight from YVR to Seattle, smooth 23 minute flight. (I think we taxied longer than we flew.)
There was a bit of a line to get into the Centurion Lounge. The wait was worth it. I had a nice lunch that included a delicious tostada made for me by a pop-up chef whipping them up in the lounge. It was just a morsel but it was one of the most amazing and flavorful bite of food I’ve ever had.
I also had a scoop of some delicious salted chocolate ice cream. Yum!

I headed over to the gate via the air train. There are two very long escalators that lead down to the train. I mean unusually long. A young Indian family was in front of me trying to wrangle their luggage and little three year old girl onto the escalator. The mother and father started down the escalator expecting their daughter to follow. She froze at the top and the panicked faces on her parents was dreadful to see. Not knowing what to do, I asked the little girl if she’d like to hold my hand and go down the escalator. She instantly grabbed my hand and I talked her through stepping onto the escalator. She gripped my hand all the way down and I told her to get ready to take a big step to get off. She ran off to her grateful parents. It was a very sweet moment and I’m writing the mainly for me so when I look back on this trip I remember this. It filled my heart.
I boarded the flight and we took off on time. Air France feels incredibly…French. After reaching our cruising altitude I was served some really good food. All of it was yummy. And the cheese course was brilliant. First of all, CHEESE COURSE! I’d like to propose cheese courses for all dinners from this point forward. Three varieties of cheeses were served followed by a dessert course with fruits and a chocolate tort. Tragically, their espresso machine was down so I had a small cup of coffee with the wonderful dessert.

With the exception of take off and landing, the seatbelt sign never came on during the entire 9+ hour flight. I love it when it’s that smooth! I got in a good 20 minute walk hoofing it to customs and then to the Air France Lounge. A Perrier, espresso, slice of quiche and a shower later and I was feeling pretty darn good. (Yay lounge showers!!) Add in the nap/relaxation room where I crashed for a bit and I’d say that’s about the perfect lounge experience.

The flight to Munich was quick. A train ride into the city center took around 45 minutes. Around half way through this fellow came and sat across from me. A bit drunk and speaking Russian he pulled out a bottle of Smirnoff took a few pulls then put it back in his bag. He then pulled out a beer stein and a can of beer and proceeded to fill the stein with the beer. I guess the lid prevents spilling? I guess it is Friday night in Munich…

A quick 5 minute walk to The Hotel Cortiina and I was checked into my room. The gentleman asked me if I wanted to have dinner. I wanted to stay up a bit later (it was around 6:30pm by this point and I really wanted to stay awake for a few more hours to help battle jet lag so he made me reservations at a Bavarian place just down the block. Hexen Grill.

Still a little early and I was getting a second wind so I looked on my saved Google maps Munich folder (my friend Tom turned me on to saving potential sites, eateries and other locations I might be interested in in Google Maps. Super helpful!) and saw I was just 8 minutes from a Willie Wonka Site.

This is just after Charlie finds the golden ticket and goes running home with it. I can’t tell you how neat it is for me to go visit these sites. one down, several more to go.
Speaking of going, I’ve got to go to bed. It’s been a 36 hour day with just a few moments of nodding off here and there. Sticks fork in me, I’m done.
Thanks for following along.
